Thursday, November 19th, was Gracie’s birthday. She is eight years old! I cannot believe it has been that long. She celebrated with a yummy special dinner of beef and a Buffalo meat chew- and of course, lots and lots of love. Since it is her birthday week, I want to tell you a little more about her story.

Gracie came to live with me when she was 1 year old. Previously, Gracie had lived with my sister and her family. My sister had bought Gracie from a breeder in North Georgia, but she did not know much about huskies or their personalities. My sister has always had Boxer and German Shepherd Dogs, but her kids thought having a Siberian Husky would be cool. Unfortunately, soon after getting Gracie my sister lost her job, but she decided to keep the puppy anyway.

As Gracie became bigger, she also became more mischievous and destructive. She learned how to open their sliding door in the back of their house and would let herself and the other pets in and out- and sometimes the baby. Obviously, locking the door was a quick solution to this. However, Gracie would become bored being locked inside all day when my sister was not home and started destroying furniture, toys, and other parts of the house. My sister could not leave her outside, since they did not have a fenced in yard. Soon, her landlord became very upset with the property damage and the holes being dug in the yard, and my sister was upset about the furniture and the kids toys. That is when Gracie came to live with me.

I was 14 years old when my sister brought Gracie over to our house. Rescue dogs are a passion of my moms and she did not want my sister to put Gracie in a shelter, so she decided to take her and maybe find her a new home. However, I gladly ruined that plan. Gracie and I quickly bonded. For about 2 years my parents were constantly threatening to re-home her due to her poor training, constant digging, and chasing the cats. Gracie would listen to me, but would act like my parents did not exist. Eventually, I was able to train Gracie to dig only in her dog run and to not chase the cats. She even came to love the cats; she would sleep with them and give them kisses. She also began to listen to my parents (but I am still her favorite!) I am thankful that Gracie and I ended up together and glad that she was not re-homed when we first got her. Coming home to her happy face is one of the best parts of my day, and we have gone on countless hiking adventures together. She is also the reason I am so passionate about Siberian Huskies, and that I am writing this blog. Gracie has truly changed my life for the better. I love my furbaby.
