I love hiking with Gracie, my Siberian Husky. I think that the breed in general are perfect for people with active lifestyles who are willing to give them the attention and care they need. If you are considering getting a Siberian Husky or a mix, please read my post on Advice from Husky Owners. Not only does it have great general advice about huskies from actual owners around the U.S., but I also included some resources at the bottom of the post from experts on the breed.
Reasons why I think that Siberian Huskies (and their mixes!) make great hiking partners:
Your husky hiking partner will not tire out easily. This is a breed that can run Iditarod distances. If you are long distance hiker, this breed will be able to match your distance and double it! Of course, always be sure to bring enough water to keep your husky hydrated and be mindful of the heat when hiking long distances.
2. Working dogs are great at helping carry the load.
Wanting a breed that you can go backpacking with and not add on too much extra weight to your pack? Huskies are great for this because they are a working breed. Working breed dogs perform best when they are giving a job, such as carrying a backpack. So you will not have to add too much extra weight to your pack, because your dog can carry much of their own supplies. Of course, you will want to slowly introduce your dog to carrying extra weight on hikes and not load them down with too much all at once. Check out my review of Gracie’s Outward Hound pack here.
3. Huskies are good trail dogs
Since huskies were bred to carry supplies between towns or other places, they tend to be pretty good at following trails or finding safe routes. Whenever we go hiking Gracie sticks straight to the trail. She is also good at knowing which paths are side trails and which trails are the main trail. However, this may depend on the individual dog.
4. Huskies are great companions
If you are looking for a dog to be your companion on the trail, huskies are great. While not all huskies are clingy or cuddly, huskies are typically pack dogs. This means they want to stick with their pack. If you have a strong bond with your husky, they will be your best friend.
Hiking with Gracie is definitely one of my favorite activities to do together. She loves it and it is good exercise for both of us. Siberian Huskies are full of energy and will not tire out like some breeds on long hikes. Gracie is even great at climbing up ledges. She can get up them faster than me! However, it is important to remember that every dog is different and not all dogs will match breed standards- especially with mixed dogs. Even if your pup isn’t a husky, hiking is a great way to get outside and have fun together!

Thanks for reading,
Katie and Gracie.
I have 3 gorgeous rescue huskies that I adore. We relocated back to Colorado from Florida after the 3rd rescue. Hike 5-7 miles a day. House is in the forest at 8000 ft. Love those pups!
