Fort Yargo State Park Hike with Dogs

01a993216503ea488983095bc7bf790ec0607d2f42This last Saturday Dylan and I took Gracie on a hike at  Fort Yargo. We met up with a group of other dog owners. There were about 10-12 dogs there! I think all the dogs had a blast.

We hiked the 7 mile lake loop trail. This trail features beautiful views of the lake and passes by an old smokehouse that you can go look in. We happened to be passing by during a historical reenactment, which was pretty neat to see! 018a01716d4dc028f3f31e53b6a4a7811b2cf93c83

I would recommend this trail during Spring or Fall. Last year Dylan and I took Gracie during the Summer and we were pretty miserable. Temperatures were in the high 90’s F- way too hot for a Siberian Husky to hike! However, all three of us did much better with the 60F degree weather.

After the hike we stopped for a picnic on the lake while the dogs got the opportunity to play (yes, they still had plenty of energy after a 7 mile hike!!)01c2c3b88e272a15468763f2e61ca11011c6d3c2ba

Fort Yargo’s website describes the park as a great place for various types of outdoor recreation: “Located between Atlanta and Athens, this popular park features a 1792 log fort built by settlers for protection against Creek and Cherokee Indians.  Today, visitors come to Fort Yargo for its wide variety of outdoor recreation and scenery.  Mountain bikers and hikers can test their endurance on 20.5 miles of trails. A 260-acre lake offers a large swimming beach, fishing and boat ramps. The park’s wooded disc golf course is exceptionally challenging.” 0178b37c324f834543b8bf05885a81de3e9e390106

The park also features dog friendly cottages and cabins. However, the lake beach does not allow dogs. Of course the park also has RV and tent camping sites. I have considered taking Gracie camping here. I believe she would enjoy it.

Please enjoy a few more of our photos below.

    1. Thank you! I always encourage people to go hiking with their dog. Even if it is just a short 1 1/2 to 2 mile hike. We have been on plenty of hikes with little dogs and they all do great. A tiny yorkie went to Fort Yargo with us!
